For the Elbois, Rio Marina still resonates with the exploitation and production of iron. This prosperous mining town, once the most important mining port on the island, is characterized by the reddish color of iron oxide, cited by Virgil in theAeneid. You can see old mining constructions, especially towards the sea. The activity stopped in the 1960's and today it is the walks, its picturesque center and the museum of the Minerals that keep its legend alive. Among the monuments to be seen are the Clock Tower, built by the Appiani family in 1534, and the church of San Rocco, built by the Prince of Piombino in the 16th century.
