Scuola built in 1516, decorated with frescoes (walls and ceilings) signed by Tintoretto among others.

The Scuola Grande di San Rocco was built in 1516, based on a project by Bartolomeo Bon. The work was carried out by various architects until the end of the 16th century. The structure of the interior is typical of the Venetian scuole : some spaces are reserved for meetings of the brotherhood, while others are for worship. The walls and ceilings of the upper floor are entirely covered with paintings by Tintoretto. He was a member of the Scuola and between 1564 and 1587 he decorated the small room of the Albergo, the upper room and the lower room in succession. In fact, in 1564 a competition was launched by the Scuola to choose the painter who would decorate the ceiling of the Sala dell'Albergo. Tintoretto, catching his competitors off guard, installed his painting on site and, being a member of the brotherhood, offered it to San Rocco. He won the commission and for 23 years adorned the walls and ceilings of the building with works that testify to his mastery in the use of color and light. Finally, the Scuola also houses works by other painters such as Giorgione, Tiepolo and Titian, as well as sculptures by Francesco Pianta (17th century), each more impressive than the last.

Smart tip: to better admire the ceilings, take a mirror at the entrance of the upper room and move around contemplating these reflected masterpieces!
