The ancient history of Ranville is attested by the passage of a Roman road linking Pont-Audemer to Bayeux. The town became famous for the capture of the Pegasus Bridge during the D-Day landings, which made it the first liberated village in France. The old swing bridge, designed by Eiffel, replaced the ferry which, since antiquity, allowed the passage from one bank to the other between Ranville and Bénouville. Over the centuries, the village's economy developed around the extraction of Caen stone, which was transported to England via the Orne. Legend has it that this stone was used to build Westminster Cathedral in London.
