Anjar, a wonderful omeyyade city built in the early th century, experienced ephemeral existence. Founded by Caliph Walid I and destroyed a few decades later in 744, the city, buried for centuries, reappeared after independence in 1949, when excavations began. The only fully Arab archaeological site in Lebanon, Anjar was on the caravan road. A haven of rest and supply for the men and animals, it was also an important shopping centre (excavations dénombrèrent over six hundred shops).Ayn al-Jarr, a «living source», was the origin of Anjar, which established itself at the foot of the slopes of Anti-Lebanon, near the sources of the Litani River, which once used to cultivate a lake on which Noah's ark would have arisen. The village, located 2 km away, is bringing together a large Armenian population to take refuge in this region at the instigation of the French forces of the mandate, after the genocide perpetrated by the Turks at the beginning of the th century.Taking advantage of the abundance of water, the inhabitants are mainly engaged in the farming and rearing of trout. After a small tour by car in the orthogonal streets of Anjar, you will notice the atypical landscape of this village where the greenery and gardens occupy a great place.
