Located to the north of the Bekaa plain, at an altitude of 1,150 m, Baalbek (Baal city) emerges as a green setting on the edge of the slopes of Anti-Lebanon. Its many sources have enabled the city to develop different agricultural activities. Baalbek has a population of about 90,000 inhabitants, to which many Palestinian refugees have been added, grouped in the Wafel camp, better known as al-Jalil in the south of Baalbek, and then Syrian. The acropolis, famous throughout the world, was built by the Romans in homage to the Sun God (Baal). This imposing work has given rise to many legends. Thus, in view of the exceptional size of some stone blocks, the participation of a race of giants or jinns in the work would have been mentioned. A scientist even put forward the hypothesis of extraterrestrial intervention! Destroyed several times by successive invasions and earthquakes, the acropolis was reduced to a field of ruins. From 1898, thanks to the work of various teams of archaeologists, the site finally resurfaced from the ground, imposing its colossal and fascinating structure on the visitor.
