Offering grandiose views over the Pelagonian plain, Kruševo is the highest town in the Balkans and one of our favorite destinations in Northern Macedonia. The architect Le Corbusier passed through here in 1911, and was won over by its beautiful traditional houses clinging to the mountainside. Little has changed since then. Kruševo prospered from the 17th century onwards, thanks to its wealthy merchants and Aromanian shepherds. It is best known as one of the centers of the Ilinden ("Elijah's Day") uprising in 1903. In memory of this event, Kruševo acquired one of the most beautiful monuments in former Yugoslavia in 1974: the Makedonium. Renowned for its cuisine and Turkish delight, the town also boasts the best paragliding spot in the Balkans, hiking trails, a ski resort, four small museums, numerous accommodation facilities and a tourist office.
