Banjane/Бањане (pronounced "baniané"), or Banjani/Бањани in Serbian, has around 500 inhabitants, 48% of whom are Macedonians and 41% Serbs. The village lies at an altitude of 500 m at the foot of Skopska Crna Gora and along the Banjanska River, 2.5 km northeast of Mirkovci. Bus connections: routes 61 and 81 from Skopje.Renowned for its two monasteries, the village owes its name to the Serbian Banjani tribe of Montenegro, who settled the area in the 14th century. Recent conflicts (between Slavs and Albanians, as well as between Serbian and Macedonian clergy) have led to an exodus, with the result that many houses are now in ruins.
