Monterosso is the first of the five villages you pass as you approach from the north. It takes its name from the ancient Roman town of Mons Rubra (the Rubras being the local patricians). The remains of a castle separating the ancient from the modern part of the town, a medieval tower and an 11th-century convent illustrate the importance of the area in the past. In the old town, with its charm of yesteryear, we encounter the architectural solutions common to each of the Cinque Terre: tangled alleyways, a village square with a parish church, covered passageways linking the fishermen's dwellings with their painted facades.
