Nietzsche, who stayed at Ruta at the end of 1886, was fascinated by this natural terrace overlooking the sea, looking down on Camogli Bay from its 269-metre height. A handful of colorful houses bravely cling to the hillside. From the17th-century church of San Michele, you can follow one of the many footpaths into the Portofino Natural Park. There you'll discover the 13th-century Millenium Church of the Sacred Heart, a fine example of the Ligurian Romanesque style, and the sanctuary of the Madonna di Caravaggio (dated 1833) at an altitude of 650 metres. The panorama is breathtaking!
