The ancient and powerful Albium Ingaunum, capital of Liguria, was one of the most important centers of the Ponente. It was conquered by the Romans in 181 B.C., and in the 11th century it participated as a free commune in theFirst Crusade. From then on, the city began to grow rich, although it had to submit to Genoa in 1251. Today Albenga has one of the oldest and most interesting historical centers in Europe. The development of tourism and the horticultural production (at the back of the city lies the Piana, a very fertile cultivable plain) are the new sources of enrichment of the city
