Koforidua, the capital of the eastern region, boasts one of the most famous bead markets in West Africa. It is recommended that you arrive as early as 6:00 am to see a full sampling of this jewelry. The beads are not necessarily of Ghanaian origin. Many Kenyan bead necklaces are on display. Besides the bead market, Koforidua is a very pleasant town. Despite the chaos of the city center, it is a very quiet destination compared to other major cities in Ghana. The end of the day is always lively and it is common to sit at the counter of a bar or a stall to check on relatives or friends who have moved away. The streets of the city center are relatively clean and, more than elsewhere in Ghana, the inhabitants let the traveler move on without bothering him too much. The city was founded at the end of the 19th century by the Juabens, who had just been driven out of their territory by the Ashanti.
