The Awesu River, which flows into the ocean here, is said to be the origin of the settlement of this region. According to tradition, the son of the chief must wash in this river before succeeding his father. This explains why, when the settlers discovered the place, which was called Ewineba (the son of the chief in Fanti), they nicknamed it Windy Bay because of the continuous wind that swept the place. The marriage of the two names resulted in Winneba. Winneba is also known for having marked a bitter defeat of the British settlers by the Ashanti in 1812. The head of the British mission was even tortured. So much for history. Today, the city has preserved in its heart some vestiges of the colonial era and is a quiet stopover, little frequented by tourists. The activity of the port is spectacular and gives the city its picturesque atmosphere. You can also visit Fort Good Hope. Its construction started in 1706, under the Dutch rule, and it offers a magnificent view of the sea and the movement of fishing boats around. The few addresses listed here are good options for a short stop in Winneba.
