Superb ruins of an Augustinian priory, founded by Sir Geoffrey FitzRobert, with fortified enclosure, cemetery, etc.

The ruins of an Augustinian priory founded by Sir Geoffrey FitzRobert, brother-in-law of Richard FitzGilbert de Clare (Strongbow), in 1193, are superb. The priory was destroyed and rebuilt several times before being finally abandoned in 1540. Among the most impressive remains is the fortified enclosure with seven towers and a walkway that surrounds the entire site. In the adjoining cemetery, a Celtic cross (9th century) stands on the tomb of Niall Caille mac Áeda, King of Ireland. A visit not to be missed, far from the hordes of tourists.
