In Drumcliff, near an austere19th-century Protestant church, lies the grave of William Butler Yeats, who died in 1939 and was buried in Roquebrune, in the south of France, where he was at the end of his life. His remains were then brought back to Sligo in 1948 to be buried where the famous poet wished. It was also at Drumcliff that Saint Columba founded a monastery in 575. The remains of a round tower and a10th-century cross can still be seen. Attached to the wall, this cross stands in the old cemetery. On its most interesting side, it features a remarkable representation of Adam and Eve: the roots of the tree of knowledge start from an interlacing motif and end in spirals representing foliage. Between the two lines indicating the trunk, the serpent stretches out, also starting from the interlacing. Above, a representation of Daniel and the lion, a rather effete Christ in glory and, on the other side, a Crucifixion that is difficult to identify. Not far from here stands the impressive Ben Bulben mountain and, 5 kilometers east of Drumcliff, a lake renowned for its salmon and trout fishing, but also for its beautiful Glencar Lough waterfall. Superb scenery in prospect!
