Ballina, with its 7,000 inhabitants, is the main town in the Moy Valley and County Mayo. It was invaded, in 1798, by a good thousand French soldiers who landed at Killala Bay under the command of General Humbert to help the Irish in their fight against the English. After taking Killala and Ballina, they crossed the mountains to surprise the English garrison at Castlebar. But their attempt ended in failure, due in part to the lack of support from the local people. If you want to visit the north of the county, or south of the city to stroll along Lough Conn, Ballina is a good stop.
