It is hard to imagine that this sleepy little town of Tullamore (population 20,000) was once the capital of County Offaly. A canal built in 1798 radically changed the economic life of the town by linking it to Dublin and allowing it to export its goods and its famous whiskey throughout Ireland and the world. The creation in 1890 of the famous Tullamore Dew, the second best selling brand of Irish whiskey in the world, was a real revolution for the economy of the village and even resulted in the installation of electricity and the first telephone lines! The distillery is now in County Cork.
