Ireland's most central city, halfway between Galway and Dublin. Crossed by the River Shannon, it's a quiet town that we'd recommend as a stopover. Its strategic location, which made it an important garrison town, and its essentially military past are reminiscent of the destiny of a city like Limerick. Some of the old houses in the center have been painted in bright colors to brighten up this rather sober town. Apart from a visit to the castle and the small museum it houses, Athlone is of limited interest, but there are a few good restaurants. But don't spend a Sunday here, as everything is closed!
