The fourth-largest city in the Irish Republic (after Dublin, Cork and Limerick) is nicknamed the "City of Tribes", in reference to the fourteen tribes that shared the area in Anglo-Norman times. Situated at the crossroads of some of Ireland's most popular tourist attractions, Galway is very popular with visitors. What's more, the city has it all: a lively center, a very young population, attractive streets with ornate facades, pub signs and original stores. From Galway, you can reach Connemara, the Cliffs of Moher or the Burren, which explains the large number of agencies scattered around the city, all offering organized tours. In this city, also considered the capital of Irish music, you'll come across many Americans and young hippies on stopover. An atmosphere of constant comings and goings animates Galway, and we observe, sometimes with astonishment, the quantity of young people in the streets.Orientation. This university town is one of the fastest-changing in Ireland. The medieval part has been restored and most streets are now pedestrianized. Eyre Square is the perimeter where bus stops, the bus station, youth hostels, a tourist office and a few local travel agencies are concentrated. Movement is constant in this square, which is also a meeting place. From here, it's on to William Street, which becomes Shop Street, then High Street, and then down to the banks of the River Corrib. This axis is at the heart of Galway's festive life. Pubs and outdoor terraces punctuate its trajectory. In a climate of construction-deconstruction, Quay Street is also bustling, in the same electric movement as Dublin's famous Temple Bar. Once on the quayside, at the Spanish Arch, don't miss the pleasant seafront promenade to Salthill, weather permitting.
