To the north of Tralee, on the N69, Listowel is a small town with a lively shopping scene. A true literary and cultural capital of Ireland, it was the birthplace of two of the country's most famous writers: John B. Keane and Bryan MacMahon. On the sightseeing front, its rather massive castle was built in the 13th century and overlooks the River Feale. It was subsequently demolished in the 15th century by the FitzMaurices to build a larger, taller castle. At 15 metres high, the view over the surrounding countryside and the River Feale is well worth the climb. Warm-up is a must!
