Picturesque and elegant, Kenmare was founded by a certain William Petty, who had served in Cromwell's army. In the 19th century, Kenmare became a dynamic center of commerce and industry. Today, it's a lively little market town and, above all, a good stopover on the Ring of Kerry for visiting tourists. The scenery on the road from Kenmare to Killarney is indeed spectacular, and access to the sea privileged. As far as sea activities are concerned, it's best to book two days in advance, and to be flexible about timetables, because whether you're fishing or cruising, they depend above all on weather conditions.
