When you arrive on Valentia Island, a small piece of land 11 km on 3 km from the bridge connecting it to the mainland, you really wouldn't think on an island. However, Valentia Island seems to be at the end of the world and the time seems to have stopped there… Valentia Island owes its fame to the fact that the first transatlantic telegraph system was established in 1857, so for years the communication was better with New York than with Dublin! Moreover, in 1992, the fossilized traces of a marine animal dating back to 400 million years ago were discovered near the lighthouse in the north-west of the island, a first of its kind in Europe.
