When you arrive on Valentia Island, a small piece of land 11 km by 3 km from the bridge that connects it to the mainland, you really don't think you're on an island. However, Valentia Island looks like the end of the world and time seems to have stopped there...
Valentia Island owes its fame to the fact that the first transatlantic telegraph system was established there in 1857, so that for years communication with New York was better than with Dublin! Moreover, in 1992 the fossilized footprints of a marine animal dating back 400 million years ago were discovered near the lighthouse in the northwest of the island, a first of its kind in Europe.
