Killarney enjoys an exceptional geographical location. Its main attractions are the popular Killarney National Park and the famous Ring of Kerry. The town's history is closely linked to religion: in the 7th century, a monastery was founded by St. Finian on the island of Inisfallen, and Killarney became an important religious center. But it wasn't until the 18th century that Killarney really took off, when Lord Kenmare turned it into a tourist center. Since then, tourism has gone from strength to strength. Several hotel projects have taken shape, to the point where, as a result of the success, some locals complain that they can no longer find affordable accommodation for themselves. The town of Killarney itself is by no means exceptional, centered around a main street, High Street, where you'll find restaurants, pubs, cafés and souvenir stores. But it's around the town that the region's real natural treasures are to be found.
