Glengarriff Bay is considered by some to be one of the most beautiful in Ireland. It is a veritable oasis of greenery, punctuated by lush islets covered with pink flowers and surrounded by mountains. The Victorians were the first to make this village, which enjoys a very mild climate, a fashionable holiday resort. A micro-climate caused by the Gulf Stream, a soil rich in peat and almost non-existent frosts encouraged horticulturists to design real exotic gardens, the most famous of which is Garinish Island, created in the 1920s by Annan Bryce and Harold Peto. Since 2000, there is also the Bamboo Park.
