On the N20 north of Cork city, Mallow is a typically Irish village with its pretty houses and colorful facades, so characteristic of the local culture. The village was the birthplace of Thomas Davis (1814-1845), founder of The Nation, an Irish nationalist weekly newspaper, and above all of the Young Ireland political movement. If you're travelling between Mallow and Killarney, you can also stop off in the small town of Kanturk (just off the N72) to visit the ruins of a 17th-century castle.
