Clonmel, a town on the River Suir, became famous in the 19th century when an Italian-Irish entrepreneur, Charles Bianconi, set up a transport business in the town, initially linking Clonmel to Cahir. These carriage trips were the first regular public transport in Ireland and later covered the whole country. Clonmel's rich and well-preserved history includes the old town walls, Old St. Mary's Church (1204) with its imposing wooden roof and octagonal tower, Franciscan Friary (1269), and Main Guard, an elegant 17th century building by James Butler (originally built as a court house).
