Petit Futé's opinion on DUNMORE CELLAR
10 km north of Kilkenny, a series of caves and limestone cavities, with stalactites and stalagmites. It was reported that in 928 the Vikings massacred women and children, who came to hide in caves to escape. In 1973, human remains (adults and children) were found in Dunmore Cave as well as Viking coins (the main thesis being that the unfortunate perished when the barbarians laid fire to caves). The Visitor Center presents the history of the cave and its geological formation. An unusual and impressive visit, attention to the rise of about 700 steps anyway.
