Founded in 1890 by architect Thomas Newenham Deane, the library has the world's largest collection of books, manuscripts, paintings and photographs about Ireland. The main collection is dedicated to the writer and poet, William Butler Yeats, winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature in 1923. Parts of the library are open to the public, including its famous domed reading room.
