A town of 33 000 inhabitants (76 540 with the agglomeration), located 12 km from the sea, Kristianstad was built in 1614 by the Danish king Christian IV who gave him the fortifications to protect the site of the Swedish attacks. Kristianstad retained its fortifications until the mid th century. They were replaced by Parisian style boulevards, which brought the name of Lilla Paris («le petit Paris») to the city. Although some neighbourhoods have a small town-dormitory look, the paved and pedestrian streets, and the many places charged with history help make Kristianstad a living city. From medieval times, the city preserved the perpendicular route of the streets. Monuments include the church of Heliga Trefaldighets Kyrkan (church of the Holy Trinity), built in red bricks between 1617 and 1628, in a Danish Renaissance style called Christian IV Renaissance. On the Grand-Place (Stora Torg), built in the wall above the entrance of the Hotel de Ville, you can see the statue of Christian IV, looking towards the heart of the city…
