The city has many assets: a lively music scene; a popular boating center due to its proximity to many lakes and rivers; and a river, the Byälven, that attracts fishermen, especially pike-perch lovers (this large fish is considered better than salmon, and is found here in abundance). Here begins the Vikingaleden, the Viking Road. It was from Säffle that the Viking king Olof Trätälja set out by boat to Arvika, 70 km further north. He went to Norway in search of a wife and sailed up the Byälven River to the old Glasfjorden. Today, this Viking route can be traveled in summer on reconstructed Viking ships.
