Inhabited since the dawn of time, Mondeville has undergone many changes. The first traces of occupation date back to the Neolithic period. Then a small rural agglomeration developed in Roman times. It is in the 10th century that the name of Mondeville appears in the texts for the first time. Situated in a fertile valley with game-filled lands, the commune acquired hunting lodges, called castles, in the 17th and 18th centuries. The most notable is the Bellemaist castle, whose surrounding wall is still visible in the center of Mondevillais. Bordering Caen to the east, the town is densely populated and today has nearly 10,000 inhabitants.
