This town at the head of a bay is Sweden's oldest (1582). Its church, built in 1672, is the only building to have survived the Russian fire of 1721. But a fishermen's quarter dating from 1792 has retained its authenticity. The surrounding area is ideal for exploring, with a visit to the Hälsingland Museum, home to paintings and reconstructions of traditional dwellings. Heading inland to the west, the 12th-century Hälsingtuna church features runic inscriptions. Excursions to the Hornslandet archipelago are also possible; ask at the tourist office.
