The capital of the province of the same name, Bengkulu is not very visited but well known. It has approximately 60 000 inhabitants. Singapore's regulars swear only by Bencoolen Street (Bencoolen is the English name of Bengkulu). The city has become a specialized counter in the pepper trade. The first factory, English, dates back to 1685, but the beginnings were very difficult. At Napoleon's defeat, the English restitueront their colonies to the Dutch, but they will try to stay in Bencoolen, which will be the last British bastion in Insulinde. The colony was not profitable until the arrival of Raffles, chassé from Batavia. He took over the region, freed the slaves and restored peace. He developed the cultures of pepper, coffee, nutmeg and sugar cane. Bengkulu was finally exchanged against the Dutch counter in Malacca in 1824. Raffles had once again to leave. It led to the creation of Singapore in 1819. A very curious man, Raffles also discovered in the surrounding area the beautiful giant flower to whom he gave his name: .We have to wait until 1942 to get back on the news. That year, a Japanese ship was sunk by a British submarine. Of the 7 000 allied soldiers detained in the region, 5 000 died in camps.
