At a distance of 14 km from Telukdalam, this village is nestled in the interior of the island, at an altitude of around 400 meters, accessible via concrete staircases. If you're in Lagundri, just join the main road and the first bemo you come across will drop you off wherever you need to go. Bawomataluo is the most beautiful traditional village on the island. Here you'll find a concentration of island culture, with handicrafts that make excellent souvenirs. A community of 7,000 inhabitants, including 500 heads of household, live in the area. The main residence, located to the south-west, is the largest and belongs to King Laowo, founder of the local kingdom, and the descendants of the Gomo family. Construction was completed by Saonigeho, of the first generation of the Laowo family, and the house is currently occupied by fourth-generation heirs. It was built in the 18th century and contains some stunning wooden carvings, including one of a European sailing ship of the period. The well-preserved Omo Zebua house also welcomes visitors. Many scholars agree that the traditional houses of Nias (Omo Hada) are among the finest examples of vernacular architecture in Asia. With a little luck, you'll be able to witness traditional dances and performances, and why not the impressive stone leaps. You can also walk through the surrounding villages and spend the night. You can also visit the megalithic monuments known as "daro-daro", associated with the ritual and religious practices of the local community. As for surfing, if you're an experienced surfer, this is paradise. If you're a beginner, you're in for a hellish ride. Waves up to 3 m in height stretch for almost 200 m, but there's no room for error, especially over the massive coral reefs. You'll meet a lot of Australians here, and a lot of guys from the Pacific Southwest who live their passion to the full. Surfboards can be rented on site.
