Parapat is located on the northern shore of Lake Toba, close to the Sipisopiso Strait. It is often used as a starting point for exploring the lake and its surroundings. The region's main town, Parapat has long welcomed tourists seeking peace and fresh air. The town sits on the edge of the lake, facing the Tuk-Tuk peninsula. Built on the inner flanks of the crater, it has a rugged topography that affords fine views over the lake. Sukarno and Sharir Hadji Salim were placed under house arrest here during the War of Independence, from 1948 to 1949. Tourists arriving in Parapat from Medan are mainly Asians from Malaysia and Singapore.
