Gorontalo is the capital of the province of the same name, which split off from North Sulawesi to become Indonesia's 32nd province. Several ethnic groups, including some Torajas and Filipinos, are scattered across the territory. In 1673, the princes of this region held out until the end of the 19th century. With the road linking it to Manado, the town of Gorontalo has grown in importance and today has a population of 150,000. Hotels have multiplied. In Gorontalo, take a look at the Hotel Saronde and the town hospital, two fine examples of Dutch colonial architecture.
