Located 65 km northeast of Yogya, along the Bengawan Solo river, in the middle of a large fertile valley, Surakarta (population 600,000), often called Solo after the original village on whose site it was founded, is for the Javanese the true cultural and historical capital of their island. Those in the know say it's no match for Yogya.During Indonesia's troubles at the end of the 20th century, the city was severely damaged by riots.It can be visited on a day trip from Yogyakarta.
