A large city of around 350,000 inhabitants, Pekalongan is the capital of batik (" Kota batik "). It has kota status. It's a city of old-fashioned charm, with strong Chinese, Indian and Arab influences. Its batiks are the finest and most sought-after in Indonesia. Traditional batiks are made in Kedungwuni, 10 km south of the city, but you can find top-quality ones at Pasar Banjarsari (Jl. Sultan Agung). The best-known manufacturer of batik tulis is Oey Soe Tjoen, whose pieces are entirely handmade and of very high quality, and therefore very expensive. Tourists are few and far between.
