Located on a wide plateau at an altitude of 768 m, Bandung is the third Indonesian city with a population of more than 2.4 million inhabitants. It is the economic and administrative capital of Java West (Jawa Barat). Founded at the beginning of the nineteenth century, the city was transformed by the Dutch into the administrative city of European style. In the 1920 s, a new town was built in the northeast with new buildings now known as Gedung sate (because of the arrow at the top of the pile building) and Dago.Several years later, the Dutch built the city of Art Deco and De Stijl, the most beautiful of which remains the Hotel Savoy Homann. At that time Bandung was nicknamed "the Paris of the Orient" thanks to the multitude of parks, gardens and broad avenues lined with trees that allowed a few shadows to be planted in the colony. Bandung became suddenly famous all over the world in April 1955 with the organization of the conference of the non-aligned countries. This great city without great charm (apart from its city center Art Decco) enjoys a cool climate and is surrounded by plantations dating back to colonial times: the Preangger. Today, the city has become the technological center of Indonesia, including its aeronautical research productions. From 1920, with the creation of the I.T.B. (Institute of Technology of Bandung), where Sukarno made its classes, the city became an important university center. Bandung is one of the most dynamic cities in the country, one of the most creative. Typically Indonesian, Bandung breathes lightness. Unlike Jakarta, women are less veiled, more bars. The alternative Java scene is here!
