The port of Pelabuhan Ratu is 90 km south of Bogor and a 3-hour drive from Jakarta. The coast, with its black sandy beaches, has been a popular tourist destination for several years. Beware: swimming here is dangerous, as the currents are quite violent. This fishing port is the birthplace of the legend of Ratu, the ogress queen of the South Seas, who kidnaps unwary swimmers and intrepid sailors and keeps them in her kingdom. The Javanese love to tell the story of these abductions. Sometimes, years later, some are released by the queen after serving their sentence and punishment. A rich man who is unpleasant to his servants may find himself a servant in the queen's kingdom. Legend has it that the queen threw herself into the ocean from the cliffs of Pantai Karang Hawu. A small staircase leads up to a shrine at the top. One of the region's major attractions is the Ciletuh-Palabuhanratu UNESCO Global Geopark, located on the border of an active tectonic zone. This geopark features exceptional geological diversity, with ancient rock formations, plateaus and volcanic activity, offering a natural horseshoe-shaped amphitheater and a series of waterfalls. Here you can enjoy surfing, paragliding, rafting, climbing, diving, fishing and forest hiking.
