Liwa runs east-west from Hamin to Arrada for 95 km. This beautiful oasis is characterized by a series of dunes. At the back of these, green plains have formed, forming a crescent. When rainfall is scarce, water penetrates the dunes and reaches the subsoil of the plains, close to the surface. The Bedouins were quick to understand this! That's why they built vertical wells. Unlike Al Aïn, here nature has designed the contours of the palm groves. In 1969, 301 families still lived here. Along this crescent, numerous forts and fortified towers were built to protect the wells.
