Here too, there are old cobbled streets with low houses, a quiet atmosphere, a harbor and its small ferry to Ærø. The bridge to Svendborg is not far away. The village center, with its pedestrian street, has lost its picturesque character in the last decades, but east of the harbor there is a string of medieval streets (Ramsherred, Smedegade and Vinkældergade). The area is known for its people: indeed, the physicist Hans Christian Ørsted (1777-1851) was born here for his discovery of the interaction between electricity and magnetism, and the actor Nikolaj Coster-Waldau for the role of Jaime Lannister, the Kingslayer, in Game of Thrones.
