Longues-sur-Mer overlooks the ocean from the top of a cliff, an ideal position from which the Germans have installed a battery of four 152 mm guns. On June 6, 1944, at 5:30 a.m., several cruisers and a battleship pounded the position. But when the landing fleet appeared offshore, the battery opened fire in its turn. HMS Ajax retaliates offshore. German guns fired until 5pm. The Longues-sur-Mer battery surrendered to the British the following day, along with the 184-strong garrison. Between sea and countryside, hedged farmland and cliffs, abbeys and cider production, Longues-sur-Mer is also a condensed version of Normandy.
