This small port city, 40 kilometers from Copenhagen, was once a prosperous trading town. It has preserved its medieval atmosphere, with beautiful 16th- and 17th-century houses. The tourist office offers a tour of the places Andersen loved and drew inspiration from. Køge is said to be the Danish town where the most witches were burned, as early as 1612, following a series of trials. The port of Køge is one of the oldest in the country. A ferry provides a link to the island of Bornholm. Beautiful beaches in the vicinity are a delight for families. Several trains a day from Copenhagen Central Station (approx. 50 minutes' travel time).
