Helsingør is a welcoming city on the shores of the Øresund, whose entrance it commands. The 4 km-wide strait contributes to the town's fortunes. Ferries run between Helsingborg and Sweden. Of course, Kronborg Castle (Unesco) is the main attraction. The mighty Renaissance fortress was the setting for Shakespeare's tragedy Hamlet. Although the mythical prince never came, and neither did the British author, you'll be walking in the footsteps of two great Danish sovereigns, Erik VII of Pomerania and Christian IV. To get there from Copenhagen, several trains leave from Central Station; allow 53 minutes.
