LOUISIANA - MUSEUM OF MODERN ART
A magical place dedicated to art that is a must to visit, even in bad weather! A museum as beautiful outside as it is inside.
What a fabulous museum Louisiana is! Modern art immersed in the middle of nature thanks to an architecture as imaginative as functional. The museum was built on a (small) cliff overlooking the Øresund in a 19th century bourgeois property. In 1958, the owner Knud W. Jensen (died in 2000) wanted to house his personal collection of the great names of 20th century painting: Picasso is represented by Francis Bacon and Kusama, Danish cubism by Lundstrøm, abstract painting by Richard Mortensen and Asger Jorn, pop art by Andy Warhol and Roy Lichtenstein, and of course Per Kirkeby.
To build the museum, he called on the architects Jørgen Bo and Vilhelm Wohlert. A maze of glass corridors winds through the natural surroundings leading to rooms that are closely connected to the outside world, as evidenced by the beautiful Giacometti room that opens onto the Humlebæk pond. Today it is the most visited museum in Denmark. Understandably, a good half day can be spent exploring it and enjoying the beautiful sculpture garden with Henry Moore, Caesar, Jean Tinguely and Alexander Calder to name but a few.
Don't neglect the creative space for children, the cosy fireplace area or the superb terrace of the café-restaurant for a gourmet break, nor the boutique-library filled with good souvenir ideas. Visits in the evening thanks to the late night opening hours.
