BOTANICAL GARDEN (BOTANISK HAVE)
Botanical garden in Copenhagen with over 15,000 plant species, a romantic lake and 27 greenhouses
10 hectares of greenery, nature and excess! Separated from Rosenborg Castle by Øster Voldgade, this botanical garden occupies a vast quadrilateral at the edge of the Østerbro district. It depends on the Museum of Natural History. The former Hortus Medicus, created by a charter in 1600, was very closely linked to the university, where plants used for medicine were cultivated. The transfer to the present site was made in 1870 because the previous grounds were no longer large enough.
More than 15,000 species of plants, all identified of course, grow in this garden with a romantic lake! There are a total of 27 greenhouses, including the Palmehuset, "House of Palms". The most tropical varieties are protected in this extraordinary glass and metal structure built in 1874. The vegetation is particularly exotic when the cold and snowy days arrive! It was inspired by the famous Crystal Palace in London and was financed by the patron Jacobson! 94 meters long, 16 meters high, made of 4,000m2 of glass panels and a surface area of 3,000m2!
It has a beautiful rotunda and walkways overlooking the rainforest, almost at the height of the palm and banana trees (access by a spiral metal staircase). But it is especially during the summer season that the garden takes all its interest when the flowering transforms the beds. A beautiful chlorophyll trip in perspective!
