Observatory-bell tower, the Round Tower is worth the detour. A breathtaking view but not the climb... thanks to its access ramp.
In 1642, Christian IV had the Round Tower built next to the Church of the Trinity to serve as an astronomical observatory. From the top of its 36 m, the view of the historic city is just as worthwhile as the climb: no stairs, but a spiral inclined plane that allowed horses to climb to the top. In 1716, Tsar Peter the Great is said to have used it with a carriage pulled by six horses! The tower has retained its original vocation as an observatory, the oldest in Europe still in operation, and has a telescope open to the public in the winter months.
