The extension to the Royal Library is one of the symbols of the city's renewal, as it embraces architectural challenges. Designed by Danish architects Schmidt Hammer Lassen, the Black Diamond was completed in 1999. It is the first in a series of large-scale cultural buildings along Copenhagen's waterfront. It owes its nickname to its polished black granite cladding!
There are two ways toget to the main entrance : from the Nyhavn side, over the Knippel Bridge towards Christianshavn - or from the Fredericksholms Kanal side by waterbus. The new building is linked to the old one by a series of footbridges. Designed like an irregular box, it leans to one side and expands at the base! A technical feat for this imposing polygon cut through the middle by a vast atrium. The highlight is the black color, which changes with the weather and the time of day. The ceiling in the passageway between the old and new libraries is by the artist Per Kirkeby.
The hugeentrance hall features a bookshop, café, restaurant, exhibition rooms and escalators to the reading rooms. The cultural program is very varied: photo exhibitions, concerts, author debates... The DIAMANT noir houses a very rich collection: 2.5 million books, tens of thousands of manuscripts, newspapers, portraits... It's the largest library in Scandinavia.
