Petit Futé's opinion on SAINT-FRÉDÉRIC CHURCH - MARBLE CHURCH

Vintage plate 2020

The construction of this church was envisaged as soon as the district was founded and was to be the high point of the district, but one thing led to another! The first project was entrusted to Nikolai Eigtved, and the foundation stone was laid with great pomp by King Frederik V on 30 September 1749. The rococo style building was to be made of Norwegian marble, hence the strange name for the church. However, the architect died in 1754. His rival Lauritz de Thurah went to great lengths to succeed him, except that... a French architect, Nicolas-Henri Jardin had just arrived in Copenhagen, and he imported the new fashion of his country, classicism. The sovereign was seduced, so the Frenchman was asked to remodel the project. But... the king died in 1766. His successor, Christian VII, was... mentally ill and unable to reign. Johann Friedrich Struensee, the king's adviser, stopped the project. As a result, the building remained in a rough draft state for 150 years. Finally, work was resumed under the leadership of the architect Ferdinand Meldahl, a great defender of the historicist style, with funding from the banker Carl Frederik Tietgen. To the great relief of the people of Copenhagen, it could finally be inaugurated on 19 August 1894. And you won't want to miss it. Its gigantic dome, 31 metres in diameter, dominates the open square on the axis of Amalienborg Palace and makes it look like St Peter's Basilica, even though it is Lutheran!
