The second-largest town in Maramureș (37,000 inhabitants), located at the confluence of three rivers (Tisa, Iza and Rona), Sighetu Marmației exudes that special atmosphere typical of border towns: Ukraine is indeed just a stone's throw away, on the other side of the Tisa. Marmației has been in a strategic position since the beginning of the war in Ukraine, particularly as regards the reception of refugees. This quiet little town boasts a few beautiful, slightly decrepit buildings from the days of the Austro-Hungarian Empire. Sighet, as it's known, also boasts some interesting museums, such as the Museum of Jewish Culture in Maramureș, housed in the house where Elie Wiesel was born. The Memorial to the Victims of Communism, housed in a former prison for opponents, is also well worth a visit.
